About us

Connecting restoration efforts across Europe to protect seagrass ecosystems and marine life.

Our Mission

Restoring Ocean Health from the Baltic to the Mediterranean

European Network

We connect leading European foundations to protect marine ecosystems—from the Baltic to the Mediterranean Sea — through shared strategies, joint actions, and policy alignment.

Restore Seagrass Meadows

We support the restoration of seagrass ecosystems as a key nature-based solution to fight climate change, enhance biodiversity, and restore ecological balance across European seas.

Clean the Ocean

We act against marine pollution through coordinated clean-up campaigns and stakeholder engagement to protect habitats and reduce pressure on marine ecosystems.

United for Ocean Health

Three foundations, one alliance: we work to safeguard marine life and ensure long-term health and resilience of Europe’s ocean and sea ecosystems.

Advocate for Change

We collaborate to influence marine conservation policies at European and international levels, promoting effective governance and sustainable marine use.

Ocean Literacy

We empower communities and future generations through education and shared knowledge about our ocean—because understanding the ocean is essential to protecting it.

Join the First European-wide Coalition for Ocean Restoration | Build the GreenBelt from the Baltic to the Mediterranean Sea

At the Alliance for European Seas we build a Green Belt—from the Baltic to the Mediterranean Sea — to restore marine biodiversity, protect coastal ecosystems, and ensure a thriving future for our seas.

We invite European foundations to join this unprecedented alliance. By uniting our efforts, we amplify our impact and strengthen our voice to safeguard Europe’s marine heritage.

Let’s act together—for the ocean, for the planet, for future generations.

Our History

The Story Behind

A Shared Commitment to Ocean Protection
2022

During the UN Ocean Conference in Lisbon, the MEDSEA Foundation (Italy), Fondation de la Mer (France), and John Nurminen Foundation (Finland) launched the first European coalition of foundations for ocean protection.

The alliance connects efforts from the Baltic to the Mediterranean, with shared goals: restore marine ecosystems, fight plastic pollution, and promote sustainable practices like the Ocean Approved label.

2023
From Vision to Action: Restoring Seagrass Meadows Across Europe

In spring and summer 2023, the Coalition turned its mission into action with the first joint seagrass restoration initiatives in Finland, France, and Italy.

From the Baltic to the Mediterranean, over 30,000 seedlings were planted to recover degraded habitats and enhance biodiversity. These nature-based solutions are vital to ocean health, as 1m² of seagrass can generate 10 liters of oxygen per day.

This marks a tangible first step in building the Green & Blue Belt and sets the foundation for scalable impact across European seas.

2025
Expanding the Alliance for Greater Impact

After launching Neptune, our first joint campaign for Posidonia seagrass restoration, the Coalition is entering a new phase of growth. In 2025, we are actively expanding the alliance by welcoming new leading European foundations that share our values and vision for ocean protection. Our next meeting will be at the UN Ocean Conference in Nice in June 2025.

Together, we aim to scale up efforts across the continent, unify our voice at international level, and create a resilient Green Belt that connects and protects marine ecosystems from the Baltic to the Mediterranean.

Our Foundations

United for Ocean Health

MEDSEA

The Mediterranean Sea and Coast Foundation (MEDSEA), based in Cagliari, Sardinia, is a non-profit organization accredited by UNEP. Its mission is to accelerate the ecological transition and halt biodiversity loss, working to keep the Mediterranean Sea clean and healthy. MEDSEA develops concrete projects to safeguard the region’s natural and cultural heritage, focusing on sustainability, environmental education, and climate action.

Fondation de la Mer

The Fondation de la Mer, established in France in 2015, is dedicated to accelerating ocean protection and safeguarding marine biodiversity. Bringing together experts from the maritime world and civil society, the foundation supports a wide range of stakeholders and leads its own projects to protect marine ecosystems, fight pollution, support scientific research, and raise public awareness.

John Nurminen Foundation

The John Nurminen Foundation, based in Finland, is dedicated to saving the Baltic Sea and its heritage for future generations. The Foundation implements concrete, measurable actions to reduce nutrient pollution and combat biodiversity loss in the Baltic region. In addition to its environmental projects, it preserves and promotes the sea’s rich maritime culture and history, ensuring that both nature and heritage are protected and celebrated.
